Reactor comprising a normally vertically extending vessel containing (a) at least one inlet for gas and/or liquid, (b) at least one outlet for reactor effluent, and (c) at least one bed of solid material, wherein each bed of solid material rests upon a support layer which is horizontally fixed in the vessel, said support layer comprising at least one opening closed by a breakplate during normal operation. During normal operation the openings in the support layers are closed by a breakplate, so that bypass of gas and liquid to the consecutive bed is avoided. The reactor is unloaded by cutting the caked catalyst into smaller pieces and breaking the breakplates. The catalyst pieces can then be removed from the reactor via the openings obtained. The reactor is particularly suitable for use in the hydrotreatment of hydrocarbon oils.
