A B S T R A C T An apparatus for the production of aluminium by carbothermic reduction of alumina comprising one or more relatively low temperature zone vessels and relatively high temperature zone vessels, each low temperature zone vessel being connected to a subsequent high temperature zone vessel by a slag flow conduit and each high temperature zone vessel being connected to a subsequent low temperature zone vessel by a slag return conduit and means are provided for applying a voltage across molten slag in each forward conduit for resistance heating of the slag in such conduit, in which each slag flow conduit comprises an outer metallic shell, a thin layer of electrical insulation inside said metallic shell and in contact therewith and a carbonaceous lining within said electrical insulation layer, said carbonaceous layer being characterised by a relatively high thermal conductivity in the radial direction and by a relatively low electrical conductivity in the longitudinal direction of the conduit.
