A method and a reactor made by a method for increasing heat transfer from a heat source outside a vessel to the fluid inside the vessel are characterized by expanding a structure within the vessel toward the inner vessel surface so as to decrease the spacing between the structure and the vessel wall. The structure may be any of the various so--called structured packings, for example, ceramic honeycombs, metal honeycombs, plate stacks, and the like. The structure may comprise catalyst. The reactor provides high activity, low pressure drop, and high heat transfer. The reactor may be especially suitable for steam hydrocarbon reforming.

Une méthode et un réacteur construit par une méthode permettant d'améliorer l'échange de chaleur entre une source de chaleur à l'extérieur d'une cuve et le fluide à l'intérieur de la cuve caractérisée par l'expansion d'une structure à l'intérieur de la cuve vers la paroi intérieure de la cuve de façon à réduire l'espace entre la structure et la paroi de la cuve. La structure peut prendre n'importe laquelle des formes dites de garnissage structuré comme les nids d'abeille en céramique ou en métal, les empilements de plaques et autres structures similaires. La structure peut aussi comporter un catalyseur. Le réacteur favorise une activité élevée, une faible chute de pression et un taux élevé d'échange thermique. Le réacteur pourrait être particulièrement adapté aux procédés de reformage à la vapeur d'hydrocarbures.
