The present invention is directed to agents for and methods of treating rheumatoid arthritis. Antibodies against MHC HLA DQw2 are administered to DQw2 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Alternatively, peptides are developed that mimic the self peptides presented to the T-lymphocytes of these patients. These peptides prevent T cell activation stimulated by self peptides derived from DQw2 itself, V.alpha. 12.1, an allele whose expression is found on expanded T cell clones of these patients, and other au- tologous antigens.
