ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method of controlling the execution of suspended processes in a data processing system. Each process to be suspended includes a command defining the time period of the suspension required for that process. The interval can take any value in predetermined steps up to a fixed maximum and no limit is placed upon the number of processes which can be simultaneously suspended. Each process has a segment of storage used when the process is suspended and all processes which are suspended for the same time period, but at different real-time starting points, are chained together in the order in which they are suspended using pointers in their segments and timing chain header segments. The chaining is achieved using forward and back- ward pointers forming the segments into a circular list. The timing chain header segments are also linked into a separate second list, and each timing chain segment includes a time value indication of the real-time at which the earliest suspended process is to be re-run, The system also includes a timing chain monitor- ing process (called an usherette process) which scans the timing chain headers to ascertain suspended processes which are to be removed from the suspended lists and, after reforming any modified timing chain list, the process computes the time that it should next run based upon the time value indications in the timing chain header segments.
