Progress of photodynamic therapy (PDT) administered over an extended period of time is monitored using an ultrasonic probe (30), which produces ultrasound images of an internal treatment site in real time. The ultrasound images indicate the extent and volume of an infraction zone within a tumor (20) or other diseased tissue at the internal treatment site within a patient's body. Light is administered to the internal treatment site from either an internal or external light source that produces light in a waveband corresponding to the characteristic absorption waveband a photoreactive agent that is administered to a patient. Prior to or shortly after initiating administration of the light therapy, a baseline ultrasound image is produced for comparison to subsequent ultrasound images made after the effects of the PDT on the diseased tissue have occurred.
L'évolution de la thérapie photodynamique, administrée pendant une durée prolongée, est surveillée au moyen d'une sonde ultrasonore (30) qui produit des images ultrasonores d'un site de traitement interne, en temps réel. Les images ultrasonores indiquent l'importance et le volume d'une zone d'infraction d'une tumeur (20) ou d'un autre tissu infecté, au niveau du site de traitement interne situé dans le corps d'un patient. Une lumière est administrée au site de traitement interne à partir d'une source lumineuse interne ou externe qui produit la lumière dans une bande d'ondes correspondant à la bande d'ondes d'absorption caractéristique d'un agent photoréactif administré au patient. Avant ou immédiatement après l'administration de la photothérapie, une image ultrasonore de base est produite en vue de la comparer aux images ultrasonores ultérieures réalisées, après que le tissu infecté a subi les effets de la thérapie photodynamique.
