Methods of isolating .beta.(1,3)-glucan or .beta.(1,3)-glucan-containing organisms in a sample, or of detecting the presence of .beta.(1,3)-glucan or .beta.(1,3)-glucan-containing organisms in a sample, utilizing a proteinaceous receptor for underivatized, aqueous soluble .beta.(1,3)-glucan (e.g., an NR8383 receptor) are described. Methods of diagnosing fungal infection, by detecting .beta.(1,3)-glucan or .beta.(1,3)-glucan-containing organisms, are also described. Antibodies and kits useful in the methods are also disclosed. A preparation containing a proteinaceous receptor for underivatized, aqueous soluble .beta.(1,3)-glucan is additionally disclosed, along with characterization of the receptor for underivatized, aqueous soluble .beta.(1,3)-glucan. Also described are assays for identifying agents which alter the effect of underivatized, aqueous soluble .beta.(1,3)-glucan on activation of signal transduction pathways and agents identified thereby.

L'invention concerne des procédés pour isoler, dans un échantillon, le béta (1,3)-glucane ou des organismes contenant le béta (1,3)-glucane, ou pour y détecter leur présence, au moyen d'un récepteur protéinique pour le béta-(1,3)-glucane non dérivé, soluble dans l'eau, (récepteur NR8383, par exemple). L'invention concerne également des procédés de diagnostic d'infection fongique, par détection du béta (1,3)-glucane ou d'organismes le contenant. Elle traite en outre d'anticorps et de trousses utiles dans les procédés, ainsi que d'une préparation contenant un récepteur protéinique pour le béta (1,3)-glucane non dérivé, soluble dans l'eau, avec caractérisation du récepteur correspondant. L'invention concerne également des analyses permettant d'identifier des agents qui modifient l'effet du béta-(1,3)-glucane présenté sur activation de voies de transduction de signal, ainsi que des agents ainsi identifiés.
