ABSTRACT A sealed rechargeable nickel electrode containing electrochemical cell has a pasted negative electrode having paste layers adhered to a nonforaminous conductive substrate (40), which retards growth (swelling) of the nickel electrode on cycling. In particular in a sealed rechargeable electrochemical cell having a nickel positive electrode, a pasted negative counter electrode comprised of an electrically conductive substrate and an electrochemically active material secured through adhesion to at least one face of the substrate, a separator interposed between the positive and negative electrodes, and an electrolyte, the improvement comprising the combination: the nickel positive electrode formed of a porous conductive substrate defining passageways laterally across the positive electrode through which the electrolyte communicates, and an electrochemically active nickel based material adhered to the substrate and interconnected through the passageways to opposite sides of the positive electrode, and the electrically conductive substrate of the pasted negative electrode being substantially nonforaminous, whereby, in charging of the cell, the normal tendency of the nickel electrode to swell is retarded.
