An engine (1) for driving a piston arrangement (13, 14, 15) for pumping water from an inlet (26) to an outlet (27) at a high- er level. The engine (1) includes a hollow housing (2) having an inlet (3) and an outlet (4) between which a liquid passes, the hous- ing (2) at least partly enclosing a chamber (7) through which the liquid flows from the inlet (3) to the outlet (4). A movable wall (6) is mounted in the housing (2) and partly defines the chamber (7). A valve (16) is provided to open and close the outlet (4) so that, when it closes, liquid in the chamber (7) is suddenly decelerated, producing an increase in pressure in the chamber to force the wall (6) to move in a direction so as to increase the volume of the chamber (7). After the initial increase in pressure, the water relaxes and the pressure decreases to such an extent that a spring (19) opens the valve (16) and a spring (10) returns the wall (6) to the position of decreased volume of the chamber (7). Thus, the wall (6) is caused to reciprocate under the influence of the pressure of the liquid increasing and decreasing as the valve (16) is opened and shut.
