The side view mirror is mounted in a housing attached to an exterior side wall of a leading motor vehicle. The mirror is pivotal about a vertical axis and a link connects the outer portion of the mirror to an eccentrically mounted gear wheel. One full rotation of the gear wheel causes the mirror to reciprocate between inner and outer positions. When the mirror is in the outer position, the driver of the leading vehicle sees an image of an overtaking vehicle in an adjacent lane when the overtaking vehicle is closer to his vehicle than when the mirror is in the inner position.
