A conveyor adapted for use with a refuse collection vehicle is disclosed. The conveyor includes a plurality of elongate slats arranged in side-by-side relation, the plurality of slats being formed by a plurality of slat sets. The upper surfaces of the slats define a convex floor surface for the hold of said vehicle. The conveyor also includes a cross member for and associated with each slat set and attached to each of the slats therein, and a slat drive adapted to reciprocate the slat sets and cross members in a cycling manner. In each cycle, the slat drive simultaneously moves all of the plurality of slats sets and cross members in a first direction, substantially lengthwise with respect to the slats, and then moves the slat sets and cross members in a second direction, opposite the first direction, one cross member and associated slat set at a time.
