ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for the recovery of particulate materials from a storage pile, comprises a main transverse bridge adapted to advance towards the storage pile, a carriage mounted to re- ciprocate along the main bridge transversely to the direction of advance thereof, a frame member suspended from said carriage and hinged thereto so as to permit limited swinging movement in the direction of advance, bucket wheels mounted on said frame member for digging material out of the storage pile, a transverse secondary bridge located behind and of less rigid construction than the main bridge, and an arrangement for coupling the frame member to the secondary bridge so as to transmit shocks thereto. In this arrangement, the weight of the frame member and bucket wheels is carried by the main bridge, whereas the more resilient secondary bridge takes up shocks resulting from the operation of the bucket wheels.
