Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to a recovery of fatty acids from sewage scum and the subsequent upgrading of the fatty acids as a processed oil. This upgrading is achieved through vacuum distillation and de-odorization. This invention relates to a process of recovery, purification and utilization of brown sewage scum or skimmings, which heretofore has been a nuisance waste. In a first step the scum is run through a heat process and a series of filters. Entrained water and other foreign solids are removed. The oily product that solidifies on cooling is found to contain more than 70% of a mixture of fatty acids. This processed oil, in a crude form, has utility as a wax replacement in fuel logs. The processed oil can be upgraded by vacuum distillation and is, at the same time, de-odorized. The foul-smelling low molecular weight compounds are removed in a forerun fraction. This allows the isolation of a clean main fraction consisting of identifiable fatty acids.
