A re-recordable talking book with the recording means capable of being permanently rendered unusable once a satisfactory recording has been made. Said book comprises a circuitry means, a storage memory to retain audio information picked up by a microphone, a sound generating means, a speaker, a disabling mode selection producing means to allow either record or playback mode or only playback mode when this means has been removed or permanently disabled, and a page determining means. The circuitry means controls record or playback according to the mode selection signal producing means, the storing of audio into memory as picked up by the microphone, the retrieval from memory of stored audio to be output to the sound generating means, and page decoding to determine specific addressable locations in the storage memory applicable to the open pages as determined by the page coding means from which to retrieve or store the audio information.
