1 PHO 78-513 ABSTRACT: A recording system for recording signals on a magnetic tape comprises a recording apparatus and cas- settes, each containing a specific length of magnetic tape, which cassettes can be placed onto said apparatus, and has a timer by means of which time-preprogrammed automatic recordings can be made. A detection device determines the maximum time available for recordings with a cassette placed on the recording apparatus and a comparator device compares an output signal of the detection devices with a reference quantity which is derived from the timer and which is a measure of the total time required for the preprogrammed automatic recording(s). When this required time exceeds the maximum time available for recording with this cas- sette, an alarm signal is produced. The cassette is pro- vided with marks which are detected by the detection device and which indicate the length of the magnetic tape con- tained in the cassette being used.
