Tertiary butyl alcohol is recovered from a higher boiling fraction of an epoxidation reaction product comprising tertiary butyl alcohol, unreacted tertiary butyl hydroper- oxide, molybdenum catalyst and by-products formed by the removal of unreacted propylene and propylene oxide from the epoxidation product by: distilling the higher boiling fraction to provide an overhead tertiary butyl alcohol fraction and a higher boiling fraction, charging the higher boiling fraction to a tertiary butyl hydroperoxide decomposition zone and catalytically decomposing the tertiary butyl hydroperoxide contained therein to provide a decomposition product comprising unreacted tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, tertiary butyl alcohol, oxygen, and oxygen- containing by-products including methanol and acetone, distilling the decomposition product to provide an overhead contaminated tertiary butyl alcohol fraction, and distilling the contaminated fraction to provide an overhead impurities fraction and a higher boiling purified tertiary butyl alcohol fraction.
