ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method for recovering bitumen from tar sand material by contacting the tar sand material with a heated aqueous fluid characterized in that said heated aqueous fluid contains an amine having the formula: R1R2NR3 wherein R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, are each hydrogen or C1 to C6 alkyl, and R3 is C3 to C20 alkyl or a group of the formula -R4NH2 wherein R4 is C2 to C18 alkylene, the total number of carbon atoms in R1, R2 and R3 being from 3 to 20. Various embodiments of the invention are described including a thermal recovery process, a hydraulic mining process, and the treatment of mined tar sand.
