The present invention relates to an apparatus and a process for producing zinc oxide from an acid soluble zinc-bearing material. The process according to the present invention comprises the steps of leaching the zinc oxide material with sulphuric acid; precipitating copper and cadmium from the leach solution using a base such as calcium oxide; removing copper, cadmium from the leach solution by cementation with zinc dust.
