Abstract The invention relates to a process for recovering caprolactam from residue remaining after distillation, under reduced pressure, of impure caprolactam obtained from rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime with sulphuric acid or oleum, comprising subjecting the residue to distillation under reduced pressure, hydrogenating the caprolactam-containing distillate so obtained in an aqueous medium and recovering caprolactam from the resulting hydrogenation product. The process provides a way of recovering the valuable caprolactam from the residue without need of any strong acid treatment and only requiring one distillation step.
