ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for recoving a glycol terephthalate from a low molecular weight saturated polyester fraction which is a by-pro- duct in the production of a fiber-forming polyester, the fraction containing at least one glycol selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, and 1,4-butane diol, water, polyester solids, and metallic impurities, the method comprising the steps of heating the fraction to a temperature sufficiently high to form a single, liquid phase with any insoluble metallic impurities and complexes thereof present as solids dispersed in the liquid phase; separating at least about 75 percent of the insoluble metallic impurities and complexes thereof from the liquid phase; acidifying the liquid phase to a pH sufficiently low to convert substantially all unesterified carboxyl groups to the - Image - OH form; cooling the resulting composition to form a solid organic phase, dispersed in a liquid phase comprising water, at least one glycol, and metal salts; and recovering the solid organic phase from the liquid phase. The method is disclosed in two ways: (1) when the acidification step precedes the heating step and (2) when the acidification step follows both the heating step and the step of separating insoluble metallic impurities and complexes thereof. The method provides a recycled raw material and reduces waste disposal problems.
