ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is provided a process for enhancing the sulfur trioxide and transition metal values contained in the flue gases from the roasting of sulfide-containing ores while recovering the magnesium values contained in asbestos tailings, which comprises a) reacting an excess of asbestos tailings with the acidic rinse waters obtained after scrub- bing the flue gases emitted in the roasting of sulfide- containing ores, said acidic rinse water containing free sulfuric acid, the sulfates of the transition metals con- tained in the starting sulfide-containing ore and solid particulates, whereby there is formed the soluble sulfate of magnesium along with silica gel and after filtering; b) recovering the filtrate containing magnesium sulfate and the soluble sulfates of the transition metals contained in the starting sulfide-containing ore.
