-47- RECOVERY OF ORGANIC LIQUID SPILLS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for removing organic liquid contaminants from an aqueous solution in which the contaminants are entrained comprises passing the solution through a contacting zone containing a fixed bed of a particulate thermoplastic elastomeric block copolymer selected from the group consisting of monovinyl aromatic-conjugated diene block copolymers, monovinyl aromatic monoolefin block copolymers, and hydrogenated derivatives of such block copolymers; and recovering a substantially oil-free aqueous stream from the contacting zone. A method for removing hydrocarbon contaminants from soil comprises contacting hydrocarbon-contaminated soil with the above block copolymer and forming a homogeneous mixture of the block copolymer and the hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, contacting the homogeneous mixture with water, recovering block copolymer-encapsulated hydrocarbon contaminant from the homogeneous mixture, and recovering contaminant-free soil from the remaining mixture. A method for recovering an organic liquid film from a liquid body or solid surface comprises uniformly distributing the above block copolymer over the organic liquid film to encapsulate the liquid film in the block copolymer, and recovering organic liquid-encapsulated block copolymer from the solid surface.
