ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a process or the recovery of a precious metal such as silver or gold from a refractory material. The process comprises the steps of subjecting the material in finely divided form to treatment with an oxidizing agent in an acid solution at a temperature below 120°C and at a total pressure of from 7 to 11 kg/cm2. The resultant slurry is then treated to remove sulfur and solids containing the precious metal therefrom and the sepa- rated solids are subjected to further treatment to recover the precious metal. The preferred method of treating the separated solids is by cyanidation.
