ABSTRACT A process for the recovery of precious metal (12) from a precious metal bearing ore or concentrate (1). This precious metal bearing ore or concentrate (1) is mixed with a strong electrolyte containing chloride ions (2) to pass precious metal (12) into solution (4), at a temperature up to the boiling point of the electrolyte (2). The precious metal (12) is precipitated by contacting the solution (4) with a metal having a potential above that of the precious metal in the electro-chemical series.
