ABSTRACT. A process is provided for recycling contaminated plastic to achieve n product having imptobrf softness and enhanced stability. The process includes the step of chilling the material being recycled to an embrittlement temperature and pulverising the chilled material to a finely divided consistency. The process is suitable for use in recycling polyvinyl chloride (PVC) having a range of acceptable contaminants such as laminations, adhesives, coatings including a polyester film of mylar in plain or metalized form. Normally recycling requires the physical removal of the contaminants to prevent contamination of the reprocessed plastic. otherwise, upon melt down the presence of such contaminants usually results in a black material of very limited utility. As a conse- quence of the improved process the pulverised contaminants are dispersed through the pulverised material resulting in plastic which may be benefited by the addition of selected colours thereto and upon re-use, as by pelletising or melting and extruding by way of a screw feeder, results in a naturally roaming material having closed cell foam characteristics which provide a good finish, im- proved softness and stability against shrinkage, enhanced resist- ance to delamination, and no retained "memory".
