ABSTRACT A method of producing petrochemical feedstocks involves preparing a slurry consisting mainly of a petroleum residue with lesser amounts of scrap rubber or scrap plastics of a primarily hydrocarbon constitution, and of coal. The presence is ensured of a quantity of transitional metal compound effective as a hydrogenation catalyst, the slurry is hydrogenated under heat and pressure, and most of the hydrocarbon content is recovered from the hydrogenated slurry as volatile hydrocarbons. The volatile hydrocarbons are hydrotreated to yield petrochemical feedstocks. The scrap utilized may include rubber recovered from vehicle tires, or synthetic plastic resin recovered from packaging materials, whilst the petroleum residue may include waste oils, heavy oils, tar sands bitumen, and refinery residues.
