A red blood cell surrogate which is composed of a nanocrystalline core particle to which an oxygen carrier such as hemoglobin is bound. An oxygen carrier anchor costing is provided between the nanocrystalline core particle and the oxygen carrier in order to provide binding of the oxygen carrier to the nanocrystalline core particle without denaturing the oxygen carrier or otherwise destroying its oxygen carrying capacity. The nanocrystalline core particle with the oxygen carrier bound thereto is coated with an exterior layer of lipid.
