Abstract A sweet-tasting foodstuff with reduced calorie content comprising a physiologically acceptable amount of a syn- thetic sweetener and a water-soluble polysaccharide as a filling material with low calorific value, said water- soluble polysaccharide having been prepared by reacting an aldohexose or carbohydrate which are derived to at least 50 mol.-% from aldohexoses as monomer units, with a poly- hydric alcohol, while using hydrogen fluoride simultane- ously as acid and as solvent.
