The present invention provides methodologies, including the utilization of genetically modified (GM) tobaccos, for the development and production of consumer acceptable PREPs encompassing the following: 1) production of low tar- to-nicotine ratio cigarettes, which allow smokers to obtain satisfying amounts of nicotine more efficiently than conventional cigarettes while reducing whole smoke deliveries; thereby reducing smoker "compensation" that exists with conventional low-yield cigarettes; 2) reduction of harmful tobacco-specific nitrosamines in tobacco products by genetic means and by extracting nicotine from tobacco and combining such with genetically modified reduced-nicotine tobacco; 3) production of improved expanded tobacco which utilizes genetically modified increased-nicotine tobacco; and 4) production of reconstituted tobacco which includes any combinations of the following: genetically modified increased-nicotine tobacco, genetically modified reduced-nicotine tobacco, tobacco leaf fractions, and freshly harvested freeze-dried tobacco.
L'invention concerne des méthodologies, notamment l'utilisation de tabacs génétiquement modifiés (GM), permettant de développer et de produire des produits potentiels à exposition réduite (PREP) acceptables pour le consommateur et consistant: 1) à produire des cigarettes à faible rapport de goudron/nicotine permettant aux fumeurs d'obtenir des quantités satisfaisantes de nicotine de manière plus efficace qu'avec des cigarettes classiques et de réduire en même temps la fumée; réduisant ainsi la "compensation" du fumeur associée aux cigarettes légères; 2) à réduire les nitrosamines spécifiques du tabac et nocives dans des produits de tabac grâce à des moyens génétiques et par extraction de la nicotine du tabac et combinaison de celle-ci avec du tabac à nicotine réduite génétiquement modifié; 3) à produire un tabac expansé amélioré au moyen du tabac à nicotine accrue génétiquement modifié; et 4) à produire du tabac reconstitué comprenant des combinaisons quelconques d'éléments parmi les suivants: du tabac à nicotine accrue génétiquement modifié, du tabac à nicotine réduite génétiquement modifié, des fractions de feuilles de tabac et du tabac séché par congélation fraîchement récolté.
