Particles are separated from the flue gas of a furnace using an arrangement of concave impingement members or U-beam separators. The U-beam separators are arranged in a plurality of rows wherein each separator in a given row is spaced away from an adjacent U-beam separator in the same row by a gap. The U-beam separators of at least one subsequent row are aligned with the gaps between the U-beams in a preceding row. A larger back spacing between some or all of the rows enhances particle collection efficiency from the flue gas by providing increased time and distance for the flue gas to decelerate before encountering a subsequent row of U-beams. The larger back spacing between some or all of these downstream rows is at least the distance equivalent to the concavity or depth of an individual U-beam separator.
