ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of reducing power consumption of an electric lighting unit consists of connecting a bidirectional surge protection element, for example a SIDACtor, in series with the lighting unit. During each half-wave of an alternating supply voltage applied to the series-connected SIDACtor and lighting unit, the SIDACtor (a) automatically switches on to supply current to the lighting unit when the voltage amplitude exceeds a given breakdown voltage threshold, and (b) automatically switches off to interrupt the current supplied to the lighting unit and conducted through the SIDACtor when this current drops below a minimum holding current threshold.
