ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Residual acrylonitrile dissolved in acryloni- trile polymers and/or water in which the acrylonitrile polymers are polymerized or processed or from acrylo- nitrlle processes is reduced to non-detectable amounts by adding to the polymer-water or acrylonitrile mixture at least a stoichiometric amount of an alkali sulfite reacts with and reduces the measurable free acryloni- trile content of such mixtures to non-detectable amounts.
