To reduce the toxic effect of carboplatin, particularly myelosuppression and emesis, a dithioether having the formula (I) R1-(CH2)n-S-S-(CH2)m-R2 wherein each of R1 and R2 individually is SO3H or PO3H2; and each of m and n is individually 1, 2, 3 or 4; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, preferably disodium 2,2'- dithiobis(ethane sulfonate) (dimesna), is administered in combination with carboplatin to a patient at substantially the same time or sequentially, whereby the dithioether and the carboplatin become copresent in the blood of the patient. Compositions comprising carboplatin and the dithioether are included in the invention.

La présente invention concerne l'administration d'un dithioéther ou de l'un de ses sels pharmaceutiquement acceptables pour réduire l'effet toxique du carboplatine, en particulier l'aplasie médullaire et le vomissement. Ce dithioéther est représenté par la formule générale (I) suivante R1-(CH2)n-S-S-(CH2)m-R2 dans laquelle R1 et R2 sont individuellement SO3H ou PO3H2, et "m" et "n" sont chacun individuellement 1, 2, 3 ou 4. On administre au patient de préférence du disodium 2,2'-dithiobis(éthanesulfonate) (dimesna) que l'on associe à l'administration sensiblement simultanée ou consécutive du carboplatine, ce qui fait que le dithioéther et le carboplatine sont concurremment présents dans le sang du patient. L'invention concerne également des compositions comprenant du carboplatine et le dithioéther.
