Abstract Dentifrice possessing superior cleaning and polishing characteristics comprising a silicious and calcined alumina abrasive system in an amount to provide an enamel abrasion to the dentifrice Or above about 450, (as measured by radioactive method) about 0.1-5% by weight and preferably 1-5% of a calcium, magnesium or sodium salt selected from the group consisting of the carbonates, bicarbonates, chlorides, phosphates, silicates and nitrates, with or without raising the pH of said composition to preferably above about 7, so as to reduce said enamel abra- sion thereof.
