In conventional reels for storing electrical cable it is known that in order to achieve the required strength more material is required resulting in an increased mass of the reel. This invention, preferably made of mild steel, is lightweight because of the arrangement of the spokes, which permit indirect tangential loading of the hubs, and enables less material to be used in its construction without sacrificing strength. The arrangement of the spokes also allows the load in the spokes to be dissipated to a certain degree by flexing of the spokes during handling. The lightness of the reel facilitates handling thereof by a single user. This invention will provide a cost effective, environmentally friendly alternative to conventional reels currently available. The reel of the invention may be used in particular but not exclusively for storing electrical cable to be transported to various destinations. Once transported to such a destination the cable is unwound from the reel to permit laying or installation thereof. The reel is then left at that destination where it may be dismantled, re-used or recycled in any other field of application.
