Abstract of the Disclosure A reel is used for coiling metallic strip material directly on an expansible mandrel or on a spool carried by the mandrel, the mandrel having a plurality of segments mounted on a main shaft for rotation therewith and radially positioned in operation to project above the surface of the shaft, or retracted to a withdrawn position in the shaft, to permit free axial withdrawal of reeled material or the spool from off the shaft, and is provided internally with a segment positioning shaft axially moveable relative to the main shaft when the reel is stationary, the positioning means controlling the positioning shaft having a double-acting actuator for providing positive actuation of the positioning shaft in a first mode for expanding the segments and in a second mode for positively retracting the segments, axial movement of the positioning shaft to the first mode position being made against a loading spring, which spring serves to assist movement of the positioning shaft to the second mode position, and locking means are provided within the main shaft for positively locking the positioning shaft in the first mode position against the force of the spring, to preclude the need for externally applying axial load on the reel during operation, to avoid axial loading on the bearings when winding or unwinding.
