ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A reflectance measuring apparatus for making contactless measurements on a moving surface of a sample moving in a given direction, the surface fluttering transversely to the direction within a predetermined range, the appara- tus being mounted on a predetermined distance from the sample. The apparatus comprises a single stationary light source for supplying light; light directing means for directing said light onto said surface so as to define an irradiated area and a measurement area within said irradiated area wherein the intensity of illumina- tion is virtually independent of said distance for flutter excursions within said range; and a measuring device for receiving radiation returned from said measurement area. The light directing means includes a condenser defining a focus and the light source is mounted at said focus. The condenser directs the light onto the surface in a substantially parallel beam to also define a core area wherein the intensity is virtually indepen- dent of the distance and to defined the measurement area to be less than the core area when the surface is at its farthest distance of the range from the measuring device.
