A device (100) for controlling reflection off of an information-bearing surface (121) is especially suitable for use in conjunction with shiny, curved surfaces containing machine-readable markings (120). The device includes a chamber (101) having an interior wall and entrance and exit apertures (112, 106), the entrance aperture (112) being associated with receiving an image of the surface, and the exit aperture (106) being associated with delivering the image of the surface to image sensing means (140). As the delivered image of the surface may potentially include reflections of the interior wall and exit aperture (106), means are provided for equalizing these reflections to minimize problems associated with sensing the image of the surface and decoding any information present. The interior of the chamber (101) is preferably uniformly illuminated to at least control the reflection associated with the exit aperture (106), a beam splitter (150) supported and illuminated,preferably utilizing a source of illumination and a transluscent panel (156) supported between the source and the beam splitter (150). The illumination sources associated with the chamber interior and beam-splitter (150) may be independently adjustable, and infrared radiation is preferably used to obscure surface roughening.

Un séparateur de faisceau (150) est soutenu et illuminé, de préférence au moyen d'une source d'illumination et d'un panneau translucide (156) soutenu posé entre la source et le séparateur de faisceau (150). Les sources d'illumination associées à l'intérieur de la chambre et au séparateur de faisceau (150) peuvent se régler indépendamment, et un rayonnement infrarouge est de préférence utilisé pour dissimuler les irrégularités de surface.
