A design method for making a bituminous mixture that is used to form a vapor- permeable layer of pavement is provided. This design procedure includes preparing one or more bituminous mixture test specimens, measuring the performance of these specimens, and selecting a desirable bituminous mixture for paving that is vapor-permeable based on the performance of the specimens. Another aspect of the present invention is the selected bituminous mixture, which includes aggregate and a bituminous binder. The aggregate should be selected such that no more than about (5%) by mass of the aggregate and preferably no more than about (3.5%) by mass of the aggregate is able to pass through a (75) µm sieve. The selected bituminous mixture should have an Air Permeability Value that is at least about (8) cm2 so as to reduce its propensity for blistering during and after construction. Still further, the selected bituminous mixture should have desirable fatigue resistance and should be substantially water-impermeable.

La présente invention concerne un procédé de conception destiné à la fabrication d~un mélange bitumineux qui sert à former une couche de chaussée perméable à la vapeur. Ce procédé de conception comprend la préparation d~une ou plusieurs éprouvettes de mélange bitumineux, la mesure de la performance de ces éprouvettes, et la sélection d~un mélange bitumineux approprié lors du pavage qui est perméable à la vapeur en s~appuyant sur la performance des éprouvettes. Un autre aspect de la présente invention concerne le mélange bitumineux sélectionné qui comprend un granulat et un liant bitumineux. Le granulat devrait être sélectionné de manière à ce que pas plus de 5 % en masse environ du granulat et idéalement pas plus de 3,5 % en masse environ du granulat puissent traverser un tamis de 75 µm. Le mélange bitumineux sélectionné devrait posséder une valeur de perméabilité à l~air d~au moins 8 cm2 environ afin de réduire sa propension au cloquage pendant et après la construction. En outre, le mélange bitumineux sélectionné devrait présenter une résistance à la fatigue appropriée et être sensiblement imperméable à l~eau.
