An optical product such as an optical lens, or semi-finished lens blank (10) is provided comprising a composite of at least three different and separately applied layers (40), each layer having a different refractive index which allow for a progressive multifocal lens having a wide and natural progression of vision when looking from far to near. In addition, a method is provided for simply, quickly and inexpensively manufacturing a composite refractive gradient progressive multifocal lens. A transition zone (45) disposed between a base and an outer layer (50) includes a distinct and separately applied transition layer or layers (40) having an effective refractive index which is intermediate between the refractive indices of the base and outer layers, and preferably approximates the geometric mean of the refractive indices of the base and outer layers. This transition zone may include multiple transition layers, with each transition layer having a different and distinct refractive index. The lens is substantially free of unwanted peripheral astigmatism, incorporates a wide reading zone and is easy to fit a patient and possesses a cosmetic appearance which is mostly invisible.

On décrit un produit optique, tel qu'un verre optique, ou une ébauche (10) de verre semi-fini, comprenant un composite d'au moins trois couches (40) différentes appliquées de façon séparée, chaque couche possédant un indice de réfraction différent permettant à un verre à foyer progressif d'offrir une progression de vision naturelle, lorsque l'on regarde de loin puis de près. En outre, on décrit un procédé de fabrication simple, rapide et bon marché d'un verre composite, à foyer progressif et à gradient de réfraction. On a placé une zone de transition (40) entre une couche de base et une couche extérieure (50), cette zone comprenant une ou des couches (40) de transition distinctes, appliquées de façon séparée et possédant un indice de réfraction efficace, intermédiaire entre l'indice de réfraction de la couche de base et celui des couches extérieures, et s'approchant, de préférence, de la moyenne géométrique de tous ces indices. Cette zone de transition peut comporter plusieurs couches de transition ayant chacune un indice de réfraction distinct et différent. Ce verre est sensiblement dépourvu d'astigmatisme périphérique non voulu, il comprend une grande zone de lecture, s'adapte facilement sur un patient et, sur le plan esthétique, présente un foyer progressif pratiquement invisible.
