ABSTRACT A refractory plate for the slide gate of a vessel containing molten metal has a refractory inner ring and a tar ring in the annular gap surrounding the inner ring. In use the tar diffuses through the mortar joint between the inner ring and the refractory plate in a uniform manner and for a protracted period and thus lengthens considerably the service life of the refractory plates.
