Long service lives of the plate set are required for economical operation of the installation, particularly when casting strands with three-plate sliding gate valves for controlling the melt supply into the mould. Premature wear points caused by sharp deflections of the melt flow and resulting high flow pressures in the melt flow passage are to be reduced by using simple means. These are characterised by an axial offset of the flow bore in the fixed outlet plate with respect to the flow bore in the fixed inlet plate in the closing direction of the sliding plate and a conical widening of the flow bore provided at least at the inlet side which produces a substantially unimpeded flow of the melt current through the sliding gate valve to the outlet tube.
