ABSTRACT A valve plate of refractory material for a sliding gate valve for the outlet of a metallurgical vessel comprises a plate body in which a first flow opening is formed through which molten metal may flow. The plate body is also provided with a second flow opening which is closed by a plug of refractory material. When the first flow opening is worn the plug is removed and the second flow opening may then be used.
