Abstract A refrigeration or heat pump installation comprises a liquid separator (12) of which the vapour chamber is connected on the one side to the evaporator outlet (11) and the on the other side to the suction side (13) of the compressor (1). An intermediate chamber (8) thereunder can be fed with liquid from the liquid separator (12) by way of a first switching valve (16) and is connected to the evaporator (10) for the purpose of recirculating the liquid. The valve of an expansion apparatus (5) is a second switching valve (6). The two switching valves (6, 16) can be brought into the open and closed condition in opposite senses. The outlet of he expansion apparatus (5) is connected to the intermediate chamber (8). This results in a controll- ed and almost continuous pulsating recirculation of the liquid through the evaporator. Fig. 1
