A refundable prepaid telephone card (302) comprises an ID code (306) relating to a prepaid account. The instrument providing the ID code is accompanied by a second instrument or a detachable portion (304) including a replacement code (310). The replacement code instrument is kept seperate from the ID code instrument following purchase. In the event of loss or theft of the ID code instrument, the owner may contact the provider with the replacement code. Upon receipt of the replacement code, the provider then suitably cancels the original card and replaces it or reimburses the owner.
