A refuse compaction device is provided which allows refuse in a large refuse container to be manually compressed. The device comprises a support means; a platen for engaging the refuse; linkage means interconnecting the support means and the platen and including at least one member pivotable relative to the support means and/or the platen; and an actuating member connected to the linkage means whereby movement of the actuating member causes movement of the platen.
