A filter system for an upright vacuum cleaner is disclosed. The vacuum cleaner includes a floor engaging foot having nozzle defined in an underside thereof and an upper structure pivotally attached to the foot. The vacuum cleaner further includes a suction source a for drawing a dirt laden air stream from the foot of the cleaner. The vacuum cleaner yet further includes a primary filter for separating small particles from the air stream and a blowback system for applying reverse airflow to a portion of the media. The vacuum cleaner further includes a mechanical agitator for applying mechanical energy the portion of the filter being subjected to reverse airflow and a fine particle collection chamber for receiving the reverse airflow from the blowback system. The combination of reverse airflow and mechanical energy increases the likelihood that small particles on the filter will be transported to the fine particle collection chamber.
