ABSTRACT Process for regenerating hydrocarbon conversion catalysts (particularly for reforming and isomerization, which comprises superhalogenating the deactivated catalysts, burning the accumulated coke in a controlled manner preferably in a series of steps at different temperatures and oxygen percentages with an oxygen containing gas stream; treating the combusted catalyst with a further gas stream containing oxygen and a halogen (preferably chlorine), and thereafter reducing the catalyst with hydrogen in the practical absence of oxygen.
