ABSTRACT A printing press dampening system having a transfer roller and a metering roller and a variable speed DC drive motor wherein the system is operated with the transfer roller in contact with the metering roller and an ink carrying form roller. The printing press, and the drive motor is coupled to drive the transfer roller and the metering roller at different surface velocities and to drive the transfer roller at a surface velocity different from the form roller by a selectable ratio, said DC motor being under the control of a regenerative controller for the application of forward and reverse torques to provide electrical drive and electrical braking. Optionally, a tachometer follower may be used to produce control of the motor as a function of the press speed.
