ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a data transmission system in which data 18 transmitted in the form of partial response pulses of Class IV the phase of the timing signal which determines sampling times of the signal mixture at the receiving end is regulated in dependence upon the integrated deviation of a sampled signal produced by the sampling from only the middle one of the three theoretical values thereof. To this end whenever two binary values of a data signal which is produced by decoding of the sampled signal, which two binary values are separated by twice the sampling period, are unequal the amplitude of the sampled signal is arranged to have no effect on the phase regulation.
